Four men arrested for house robbery

Information at the police's disposal reveals that five men went into the compound, robbed six victims of cash, cellphones and groceries at gunpoint.

The police in Delmas arrested four suspects who robbed farm dwellers on Sunday night, at approximately 20:00. The tireless effort of the police led to the apprehension of four of the five suspects in the early hours of Monday.

Information at the police’s disposal reveals that five men went into the compound, robbed six victims of cash, cellphones and groceries at gunpoint. A house robbery case was registered with police who immediately instituted a probe and a manhunt for the miscreants got underway and they were brought to book soon thereafter. The cellphones and some of the stolen items were also found in their possession.

 

The four suspects aged between 27 and 39, will appear at the Delmas Magistrate’s Court today, facing a charge of house robbery. A manhunt for the remaining suspect as well as the search for the firearm which was used in the commission of the crime is underway.

Meanwhile, the Mhala Regional Court imposed a 15 year jail sentence on 33-year-old Tebogo Nhlanhla Mokoena from Marite Trust near Bushbuckridge. Mokoena was sentenced on Friday for robbery with aggravating circumstances and further received an additional five years for kidnapping.

 

The sentencing comes after the accused together with his two accomplices, who were acquitted by the court, accosted a man and his wife, robbed them of cash and a cellphone. The court heard how on 07 September 2014, at about 20:00, the accused (Mokoena) proceeded to tie the man up using his (victim’s) shirt and forcefully took the woman to their house at gunpoint. He searched the house and further helped himself to more cash that was in the house and fled, hence the sentencing. Mokoena was not only sentenced, but was further declared unfit to possess a firearm by the same court.

Police management in the province applauded the police for the speedy arrest of the suspects in the robbery case in Delmas. In the same breath, they commended the investigation team for securing such a sentence which will sever to deter other would be criminals.
