Police on the lookout for suspects who shot Flying Squad members

The incident happened on Tuesday around 22:00 when the squad members were conducting patrols on the N4.

MPUMALANGA – The police in Mpumalanga are looking for a group of suspects who shot at members of the Middleburg Flying Squad.

They signalled a white Audi A4 with Gauteng number plates to stop for a search. The vehicle allegedly pretended as if it was coming to a halt, but suddenly sped off. The squad members gave chase, during which the suspects opened fire. One member was shot and injured and is currently receiving medical attention.

The same suspects are said to have exchanged fire with police in Kriel on the same night. However it is not known whether any of the suspects were shot.

The provincial commissioner of SAPS, Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma, says he is troubled by this unfortunate incident and calls on the public to help the police with tangible information that will lead to the arrest of the suspects. “It cannot be true that lawless individuals can defeat the police and get away with crime. Let us move forward as a collective, isolate and sniff them out from their hideouts”, said General Zuma.
