Bogus doctor arrested for illegal abortions

He was arrested during a joint sting by the police, Health Professions Council of South Africa inspectorate office and the Medicines Control Council.

The Hawks, together with the Health Professions Council of South Africa and Medicines Control Council, arrested a 46-year-old male on Tuesday for performing illegal abortions.

According to the Hawks spokesperson, Capt Dineo Lucy Sekgotodi, information was received about a bogus doctor who was operating an illegal surgery in Malalane.

“An investigation revealed that the so-called doctor is not registered with the SA medical council as a doctor and he is practising illegally, using traditional medicines and abortion pills,” said Sekgotodi.

The doctor was arrested before he could start performing an abortion to a client who paid R700 for the abortion. “The surgery was searched pamphlets for abortion, medicine, cell phone and money were seized and sent to a laboratory,” she said.
