Yesterday, Witbank police arrested a 36-year-old social worker for corruption following allegations of blackmail.
A man suspected in a shoplifting case was channelled by the Witbank Magistrate’s Court into a diversion programme. The suspect was supposed to have been the one responsible to assist the man with the diversion programme. However, instead of rendering her services for free, she allegedly blackmailed the man into paying an amount of R1 500.
The matter was then brought to the attention of the police who after a short probe, arrested the social worker. Last year, another social worker was arrested at Middelburg in connection with the same modus operandi. The case is due to commence with trial as from September 1 2017.
The suspect will appear before the Witbank Magistrate’s Court today.
