Five men arrested for business robbery

The suspects allegedly went into the shop, held the owners at gunpoint, demanded cash and they (owners) complied with their demands.

NELSPRUIT – The Provincial Commissioner of police in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma appreciates the working together by the men and women in blue from neighbouring stations in the fight against crime. This appreciation follows an incident in which five men were brought to book shortly after robbing a shop at Daggakraal Village, near Amersfoort.

Police at Amersfoort alerted their neighbouring stations, including Volksrust to be on the lookout for a grey Volkswagen Polo with five armed men who robbed a shop at Daggakraal on Tuesday, 25 July 2017.  They helped themselves to airtime vouchers and cigarette packets, they also took an undisclosed amount of cash before fleeing the scene in the Polo.

A manhunt was launched and a vehicle fitting the description of the getaway vehicle was spotted at a filling station in Volksrust and police approached it for a search. During the search, police found an unlicensed firearm which is believed to have been used in the commission of the robbery. They further found airtime vouchers, cigarettes packets as well as cash which are also believed to have been robbed at the shop and all five men were nabbed on the spot.

The suspects, Witness Masinga aged 36, Musa Nxumalo aged 28, Zakhele Mlambo aged 24, Dumisani Fakude aged 28 and Evans Hlatshwayo aged 30, appeared at the Volksrust Magistrate’s Court yesterday, 26 July 2017, facing a charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm, ammunition as well as stolen property. They were remanded in custody until 07 August 2017, pending further investigation. They are still expected to appear at the Amersfoort Magistrate’s Court on a charge of business robbery soon.
