MATSULU – Matsulu residents continue to show a united front in the fight against crime in the area.
On Tuesday (March 14) hundreds of residents picketed outside Kabokweni Magistrate’s Court against the bail to two suspects arrested in connection with armed robberies, common robberies, attempted murder and other crimes committed in MatsuluThe suspects were initially arrested along five other suspects were previously released on bail between R500 and R1000 at the Matsulu Periodical Court.
“This is a milestone achievement for SANCO in Ehlanzeni region,” says Chris Mashele, SANCO’s regional secretary. He further sensitized the community to avoid buying stolen goods in the streets. “Failure to do so you will be arrested by us and we will take you to the police station because this will increase crime in our community,” he said.
Mashele also called on the police to have alternative ways of dealing with the verification of stolen goods found by the police.
“The current system of producing slips as proof of ownership is not sustainable as slips and invoices easily fade their ink, thus making it difficult for owners to produce those slips to identify their recovered goods,” he said.

Recently the community handed a memorandum of demands to the provincial police representatives demanding more resources, police visibility and upgrading of the police station from a captain level to that of a colonel level. They also demanded police to raid and apprehend suspects who commit crime in the area.
“The police must spare no effort in investigating where drugs and other elements of social ills that rob our children their future emanate from,” he said.
He also demanded the speedy investigation of pending cases of business burglary from the police.
