Medical doctor remanded in custody

 A 33-year-old medical doctor, Mmeli Khuzwayo from a local government hospital in Volkrust has been remanded in custody after his appearance at the Volkrust Magistrate’s Court today on allegations of business robbery.

Information at police disposal reveals that the suspect went to one of the filling stations in Volkrust on Saturday at approximately 03.00 where he held the employees at gunpoint and demanded money.

He then took an undisclosed amount of cash and fled the scene. Later on the day, Khuzwayo is reported to have went back to the same filling station and was recognised as the one who robbed the filling station earlier.  The police were summoned and  responded pronto as a result he was busted. The suspect was found in possession of a firearm which is believed to have been used in the commission of the robbery, however it turned out to be a toy gun.

Police further recovered that the suspect has recently resigned from the hospital. He will remain in custody until Monday, October 24  for a formal bail application.
