Update: Bloody body discovered near shopping centre

A post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death. A murder case has been opened.

MBOMBELA – Police are investigating a murder case after the body of a man was found in the vlei close to the Crossing Shopping Centre bridge yesterday morning.

He had a bloody wound to the back of his head.

“The man was declared dead at the scene. We are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death,” said Capt Dawie Pretorius, spokesperson for the Nelspruit police.

He added that a post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death. “A murder case has been opened,” he said.
According to witnesses the body was discovered by two young men crossing the bridge, who then alerted Hi Tech Security.

Hi-Tech Security Nelspruit officer, Mr Riaan Horward, said he was at the centre at around 06:15 when he discovered the body after being approached by an unknown man who told him someone was lying in the grass close to the bridge.

The police, forensic unit and paramedics were then called to the scene.

A security guard’s jacket was found a few metres from the body.

The victim was wearing trousers and his shirt was torn.

“We cannot say whether he was a security guard or not. His trousers were also wet. A wallet with his bank cards and a cellphone were discovered in his pockets,” added a witness.

He said that it seems the man was hit with a blunt object at the back of the head.
