Reservists found guilty on charges of fraud

The reservists were arrested in 2009 while they were still working at Machadodorp SAPS, where they forged the certificates in an attempt to be permanently employed.

MACHADODORP-Two former reservists of the Machadodorp Police Station have been found guilty of forging their matric certificates.

Ms Lettie Ntuli (34) and Mr Philemon Sekwane (31) pleaded guilty to charges of fraudulent matric certificates and were convicted by the Machadodorp Magistrate’s Court on August 24.

They were each sentenced to 12 months of imprisonment or had to pay a fine of R6 000, half of which has been suspended for the next five years on the condition that they do not commit a similar crime.

The reservists were arrested in 2009 while they were still working at Machadodorp SAPS, where they forged the certificates in an attempt to be permanently employed.

The two reservists, and four other suspects, allegedly requested that Mr Bongani Sydney Madonsela forge matric certificates for them.

Madonsela supposedly printed the certificates which were later submitted for the employment enlistment, and were found to be fraudulent during the selection processes. The suspects were then arrested.
Three of the suspect’s cases were withdrawn due to a lack of evidence, while the fourth suspect died before the sentencing date. The two reservists pleaded guilty, while Mandonsela pleaded not guilty. Madonsela will reappear in court on October 5.
