Two policemen arrested for stealing dagga

The officers’ arrest came after a tip-off regarding the duo who were busy loading dagga into a state vehicle at the storeroom of the police station.

PIET RETIEF- Police arrested two of their own, a 48-year-old Warrant Officer, Reginald Coka and a 40-year-old Sergeant, Sipho Mathenjwa, both stationed at Mahamba Police Station.

They appeared before the Piet Retief Magistrate’s Court after they were busted with dagga allegedly stolen from the exhibits storeroom.

The officers’ arrest came after a tip-off regarding the duo who were busy loading dagga into a state vehicle at the storeroom of the police station.

Members of Visible Policing and Crime Intelligence were mobilised and swiftly responded.

The state vehicle in question, a Toyota Double Cab was spotted at Piet Retief in motion and was stopped and searched.

Five bags filled with dagga believed to have been stolen from the storeroom, were found on the back seat of the bakkie.

The bags were seized and the members arrested and charged with possession and dealing in dagga as well as corruption.

Coka and Mathenjwa were each granted R2 000 bail and the case postponed to September 6, pending further investigation.

“The arrest of the members by their colleagues is an indication that no one is above the law, as well as the resolve by the SAPS to root out all rotten elements within their ranks, to ensure that no form of crime/corruption is tolerated within the Service,” said the Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma.
