Job scams rife in Mbombela

This publication got a tip-off from Themba Tshabalala from Phola Trust who almost fell prey for the scam after he was asked to pay an amount of R850,00 as "cold-drink" money.

MBOMBELA- The unemployment rate is high and job scamming in Mbombela seems to be prevalent.
There seems to be a syndicate that goes around promising people employment at Kiaat Private Hospital.

This publication got a tip-off from Themba Tshabalala from Phola Trust who almost fell prey for the scam after he was asked to pay an amount of R850,00 as “cold-drink” money.

“My sister gave me the contact details of a man who refers to himself as Silubane for a general worker post at Kiaat hospital.

The man asked for my details through a message after a telephonic interview which I sent without hesitation. I became suspicious when he demanded I deposit cash at a Spar or Shoprite outlet in order for me to receive my uniform.”

Tshabalala also mentioned how the man avoided meeting him in person to “collect” the money. “People must not fall for these people’s tricks, it’s all a lie!

He insisted I deposit the money and text him the withdrawal numbers, but I told him I do not have at the moment, he stopped contacting me and I immediately alerted my friends and family,” he said.

The hospital’s management is aware of suspects selling employment positions.

A statement released by Detective Constable WF Meyer states: Reported cases were finalised and filed due to the lack of linking numbers to a specific person which is also difficult to prove in court.

All the cellphone numbers used by the suspects are “pre-paid” therefore they are not linked as contract cellphone numbers are linked to a specific person.

The community is urged to contact the Nelspruit Police Station to report any fraudulent crimes on (013)7591299 at the Nelspruit Detective Branch on floor 2 room 34.
