UPDATE: Annatjie’s alleged kidnappers remain in custody

The suspect, Mr Selby John Mabila (26) from Mozambique, was remanded in custody until his next court appearance for formal bail application on June 27.

WHITE RIVER – The two suspects arrested in connection with the alleged hijacking and kidnapping of Ms Annatjie Myburgh appeared in the White River Magistrate’s Court yesterday and today.

“For now they still face charges of kidnapping and hijacking. We are still waiting for the post-mortem results to determine the cause of the victim’s death,” explained Sgt Gerald Sedibe, the provincial police spokesperson.

The victim was allegedly hijacked from her home in the Curlews Rocky’s Drift outside White River on Wednesday June 15 and, according to police reports, her body was found in the bushes outside White River on June 18.

The MEC for Community Safety Security and Liaison Mr Vusi Shongwe called the court to deny bail for the both alleged abductors. He urged the police to gather enough information to secure a conviction of, what he called “these dangerous criminals.”

“We must always work hard to maintain trust that communities have towards our police and this could be only done if we remove heartless and dangerous people who continue to terrorise innocent people. We can only do this with the support of the Department of Justice and Constitutional development and enough evidence that link suspects to the crime,” added Shongwe.
He expressed his condolences to the Myburgh family and friends.
