Police to work tirelessly in arresting Phelembe’s killers

All relevant units in the police sector are involved in this case; the intelligence unit, the Hawks and police, both provincially and nationally are involved as this matter requires us to double our efforts.

PIENAAR – The MEC for safety, security and liaison, Mr Vusi Shongwe assured the family
of slain ANC deputy chairperson of Ward 23, Mr Zane Phelembe that the law-enforcement team will not rest until his killers are arrested.

“The God whom I serve will give us power to crack this. The police are busy day in and day out investigating this matter,” Shongwe said on Friday during a courtesy visit to the bereaved family.

He added that the matter had been transferred from the Pienaar Police Station because it is a high-profile case.
“All relevant units in the police sector are involved in this case; the intelligence unit, the Hawks and police, both provincially and nationally are involved as this matter requires us to double our efforts.”

He also called on the community to stop making speculations about the reason for Phelembe’s murder as some think the killing was either politically motivated or had to do with tenders. “Stop making speculations and allow law enforcers to do their investigations,” he said.

Shongwe voiced his concern about Pienaar being a crime hub and said this must be stopped. “As long as I’m a the MEC there will be no-go area for me and the police. We are here to give you hope that the police won’t rest until the case is cracked (stet),” he said.

Pastors of the community and Shongwe’s entourage prayed for peace for the whole of Pienaar and the family to be comforted in this time.

Phelembe was shot at very close range next to his house on Saturday night while coming from a neighbour’s night vigil to have his dinner with an intention of going back to the night vigil. He will be laid to rest tomorrow and his memorial service will be held at Daantjie sports ground from 7:00. May his soul rest in peace.
