Troubled teen get another chance

The owner added that, through his interaction with the boys working at the car wash, their lives have improved for the better.

THEKWANE SOUTH – In an attempt to fight poverty, unemployment and to keep teenage boys from being involved in illegal activities, a middle-aged man started a car-wash in the heart of this location.

Lunga’s Car Wash in Thekwane Street, near #Tag stores, was established two years ago by Mr Lunga Mhlanga.

His objective was to gather unemployed boys and keep them from aimlessly wandering the streets. He explained that some of them were even forgotten by their parents – mostly single mothers – because of their engagement in drugs, especially nyaope. He added that, through his interaction with the boys working at the car wash, their lives have improved for the better.

“Some of them were into drugs and displayed antisocial behaviour but ever since we started to meet here, they are not so involved in it anymore because they are being kept busy. “We charge R50 to wash both the interior and exterior of a car. The boy who does the job takes R20 and I get R30,” he said.

Some of them even run an informal barbershop under a cardboard shelter.

They need assistance to upgrade the concrete floor of their place. For assistance contact Mhlanga on 072-902-7771.
