Pilgrim’s Rest tender revoked

According to business rights watchdog Afrisake's CEO Cornelius Jansen van Rensburg, the move by the provincial Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport to cancel the agreement came amid pressure from the organisation and the Pilgrim's Rest business fraternity.

MBOMBELA – The ongoing tender process at one of Mpumulanga’s prime tourist destination concerning rental agreements has been revoked.

According to business rights watchdog Afrisake’s CEO Cornelius Jansen van Rensburg, the move by the provincial Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport to cancel the agreement came amid pressure from the organisation and the Pilgrim’s Rest business fraternity.

As a result the watchdog was welcomed the decision and also indicated that this was as a result of their call last year to assist to the area’s community with legal counsel in a bid to protect their rights.

Jansen van Renburg added that this was after the department followed a flawed and controversial tender process in 2012 for rental agreement to business premises in the historical town.

“In January of this year, a damning report on the tender process issued by the Public Protector strengthened Afrisake’s case. The legal action can now be put on hold with the expectation that a new tender process will be introduced,” He said.

Jansen van Renburg added that the organisation will monitor the process closely.

“Should the new process be flawed again, Afrisake will not hesitate to take up the matter on behalf of the business community.
