MEC allegedly denies son attended school

Mr Simon Skhosana is being sued for more than R140 000 in outstanding school fees for his son.

NELSPRUIT – A local MEC is being sued for allegedly failing to pay his son’s fees to a private school in Johannesburg.

Mr Simon Skhosana, who was appointed MEC for cooperative governance and traditional affairs in February last year, allegedly owes Bishop Bavin School St George’s fees amounting to R143 346.

According to Ms Corlia van Veijeren, the attorney acting on behalf of the private Anglican school in Bedfordview, Skhosana simply denies that his son ever attended the school and the matter will have to go to court.

This newspaper has obtained documents showing that Skhosana received a summons in September 2012 to pay the full amount plus 15 per cent interest. Attendance registers show that the underaged child started attending the school as a grade 8 pupil in 2009, and was still enrolled in January 2011.

According to Van Veijeren, Skhosana signed a written agreement with the school by which he assumed full responsibility for the payment on November 18.

The attorney explained that the fees were outstanding for the period January 2010 to January 2011.

At the time of going to press, Skhosana’s office would not explain why the fees had not been paid, nor provide proof that he had in fact paid.
