Kaapmuiden SAPS warn residents against crime activities ahead of festive season

The police warned residents to keep safe during the approaching festive season, especially when sharing their stokvel payout money or using the N4.

The Kaapmuiden SAPS has warned the residents to be more vigilant and stay away from criminal behaviour as the festive season approaches.

This was during the Sports Against Crime Awareness Campaign at Kaapmuiden Primary School on September 24.

Sergeant Goodman Matsebula said the event was to commemorate Heritage Day and also to sensitise the residents as the busy days approach.
“People will soon be sharing money from their stokvels, and we know it is some of the members who set up the treasures for the criminals so they can benefit from the money. We therefore encourage people to do these kinds of stokvels through the bank as it is much safer.

“We would also like to appeal with the community to stop hitchhiking on the N4. We have had incidents where people would find themselves in bushes as victims of rape and robbery. People need to utilise proper transport so they can get to their destinations safely,” said Matsebula.

He further warned residents against committing toll gate card scams, emphasising that they are working around the clock to catch the criminals. “There are people who use the local discount cards from TRAC at the toll gate as a scam. They basically use the cards for motorists who have to pay half the money to them. This has been going on for a while, and I am happy to say that we have made progress in apprehending some of these scammers. We will continue to work tirelessly in ensuring this scam is ended altogether.”

Matsebula added that the police have had to be called out to the N4 quite a number of times when pedestrians were trying to cross the road while intoxicated, and some were hit by vehicles.

“The N4 is one of the busiest roads in the country. One would have to be twice as vigilant in order to cross over as a pedestrian – how bad would the situation be for a pedestrian who is drunk? We have had incidents where people were hit when they tried crossing over under the influence of alcohol, and then their bodies are driven over by multiple cars. I therefore appeal to the community to ensure that they stay alert and never indulge in anything that might cost them their lives.”
