The Walkers took on the challenge to raise awareness on climate change.

On Saturday. September 7, the Lowveld Walkers of Mbombela tackled a spring celebration and climate change awareness walk.

They walked from Plot 43 along the R40 towards Hilltop in four categories, the 5km, 10km, 14km and 21km.

With this kind of walk we feel that we are also doing our part in contributing to promoting local tourism during Tourism Month.

Lowveld Walkers’ founder, Joseph Mashaba, said the route was challenging, although it was a successful event.

“The walkers enjoyed it, yet they struggled when they were climbing the uphill. It is always nice using that route, because there is a nature reserve and we get to see the animals. With this kind of walk we feel that we are also doing our part in contributing to promoting local tourism during Tourism Month,” he said.

Mashaba said as part of raising awareness on climate change, they exchanged flowers and plants.

“The participants brought the flowers and plants. This way, everyone will go home and plant something, and we would have contributed towards this.”

He said they celebrate spring because some of the walkers take a break during winter and come back as the seasons change. “They choose to take a break as some cannot afford to be exposed to the cold weather.”

Mashaba said this walk helped them start a build-up towards their next events, which will be a sports fun day and a hiking day. He also urged the public to join the weekly walks as they are free and help everyone to stay fit.
