Schools take on MTF tourney with zeal in KaNyamazane

Eight sports teams from primary and secondary schools in the Nsikazi region participated in the final of the tournament, in soccer and netball.

The MTF Development Agency hosted its annual sports tournament finals with a full day of netball and soccer games, as well as music.

Four netball and four soccer teams from various primary and secondary schools in KaNyamazane, Pienaar and KaBokweni qualified to battle it out in the finals at the KaNyamazane Stadium on Saturday, August 31. The tournament took place throughout August.

In the beautiful game of football, Thembeka Secondary School took on Chief Charles Secondary School and claimed a 2-0 victory. Likweti Primary School lifted the winning trophy after a challenging game against Sibambisene Primary School, leading to a 1-1 draw. The match went to penalties and the Likweti boys scored five, while their opponent scored only three.

On the netball court, Portia Shabangu Secondary School shot 63 goals, beating Sidungeni Secondary School, who only managed to shoot 17. The youngsters of Tekwane Primary School played brilliantly against Ndlaphu Primary School and despite a disruption by a drizzle, Tekwane won 34-16.

Spectators came out in their numbers as entrance to the stadium was free, as the tournament aimed to elevate these communities.

The MTF Development Agency’s deputy chairperson, Smanga Mpila, said the tournament was successful and well supported despite the rainy weather.

“We are looking forward to the next one and it growing from strength to strength to give back to the community. We also encourage people from Matsulu and other surrounding areas to take on such an initiative that will elevate various sporting codes and keep children from wandering the streets,” he said.

The tourney was graced by the former Kaizer Chiefs player, George Lubisi, the HOD of the Mpumalanga Department of Culture, Sport and Recreation, Godfrey Ntombela, Lucia Ochan-Simelane and Mr and Miss Mpumalanga, Sibusiso Shishaba and Bajabulise Thela.

The tournament ended in a celebratory spirit with the stage set for a music festival. Nationally renowned musicians Lwah Ndlunkulu, Aymos and Nkosazana Daughter, accompanied by some local DJs, DJ Fitted, Zie on Deck, DJ Lady 7, Mnyasa and a vibrant dance performance from Phindy – The Real Queen, entertained the audience.
