Journalism greats nominated for this year’s sports awards

Two Caxton stalwarts have recently been nominated for the Mpumalanga Sports Awards.

Caxton Community Newspapers’ and Lowveld Media’s Mark Kinnear and Wayne van der Walt have been nominated in this year’s instalment of the Mpumalanga Sports Awards.

These awards are an annual event hosted in partnership with the Mpumalanga Provincial Government, which recognises and rewards Mpumalangan individuals and teams across all racial and ethnic groups in the different sporting codes.

This year marks the sixth edition of the awards, which will be hosted at the Communio Church in Mbombela on September 14.

Kinnear, a seasoned sports journalist and sub-editor for Lowveld Media’s stable of community newspapers, including Mpumalanga News and Lowvelder Express, was nominated for the Sports Journalist of the Year. He will contend for the top honours against another one of Mpumalanga’s great sports writers, Jabulani Khumalo, who is currently attached to the Mpumalanga Mirror, and the Middleburg-based writer Matthew Kai Handley.

Also representing the Lowveld Media stable is the Ermelo-based Highvelder photojournalist, Van der Walt, who was nominated in the Sports Photographer of the Year category. Van der Walt will go toe-to-toe against the experienced Khumalo and Nicky Klingbiel for this special award.

Other interesting categories include the Coach of the Year, Team of the Year, Sportsman and -woman of the Year and the People’s Choice Award.
