University of Mpumalanga’s postgraduates excel in SA animal science quiz

The three students faced competitors from some of South Africa's top universities.

Three postgraduate women students of the University of Mpumalanga (UMP) recently excelled at the 2024 South African Society of Animal Science (Sasas) quiz competition in East London.

The students, Ntiyiso Chavalala, Siphiwe Zainap Madonsela and Pumelo Mantho Gança, faced competitors from top universities in South Africa and showcased their expertise in animal nutrition, breeding, physiology and general animal science.

Sasas provides a platform for academics, students and industry leaders to explore the state of animal production and genetics in southern Africa, highlighting various disciplines and their relevance to environmentally stressed production animals.

During an interview with Lowvelder, Chavalala said they were selected to represent the UMP based on their academic performance, critical thinking skills, teamwork, confidence, public speaking skills and their ability to work in an unfamiliar environment alongside new people.

“For the first round or semi-finals, we did not win anything, however, we were able to secure space for the finals and received free registration. In the finals, we received books related to animal science,” she said.

“I feel honoured to have been part of one of the winning teams that participated in 54th annual Sasas congress. It takes a lot of support, dedication and teamwork to be able to participate in such an event.

Winning the competition was such an amazing experience. Being one of the students who has a university’s recognition has brought me pride and a great sense of responsibility, as it is such a great achievement to be recognised on a national level,” Chavalala said.
