More than R2.5m of contraband goods seized in Hazyview

The police received a tip-off that led them to the residential place where the goods were stored.

The Mpumalanga SAPS seized contraband goods worth more than R2.5m and arrested three people for the possession illicit cigarettes.

This was during Operation Shanela conducted in Hazyview on Thursday, August 22.

A Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Colonel Donald Mdhluli, said the breakthrough was made when the police conducted compliance of liquor outlet operations in the Calcutta area.

“The members then received credible information regarding a truck suspected of transporting contraband goods. The police traced the information to a residential property in Hazyview. A substantial quantity of contraband items, valued over R2.5m, was discovered inside a large store. It was during this time when the three suspects were cornered. When searching inside the premises, the team also discovered about 10 live rounds of ammunition.”

The suspects, two males aged 30 and 35 years, and a woman aged 61, face charges of unlawful possession of ammunition, as well as possession of illicit goods.

“The three are currently in police custody, pending their court appearance soon and the investigation continues as the team of investigators gathers further evidence in relation to this matter,” Mdhluli said.

The acting Mpumalanga police commissioner, Major General Dr Zeph Mkhwanazi, has lauded the public that provided such valuable information to the to the police.
