City of Mbombela executive mayor hands over a new home in Numbi

The beneficiary of the house, Dumisani Maphanga, was happy when Cllr Sibongile Makushe-Mazibuko and other stakeholders handed a new house to him.

The executive mayor of the City of Mbombela (CoM), Cllr Sibongile Makushe-Mazibuko, and several stakeholders handed over a fully furnished brand-new two-bedroom house to a resident of Ward 25 living with a disability on Wednesday July 24.

The handover to Dumisani Maphanga formed part of the CoM’s Mandela Month activities.

“We donated the house to Maphanga because we decided as a government that we must give 67 minutes of our time to celebrate the late Nelson Mandela by actually doing something tangible and meaningful for the benefit of others.

The executive mayor, Cllr Sibongile Makushe-Mazibuko and Dumisani Maphanga.

I learnt about dedication from Mandela and that we must work for people and help them by giving of ourselves. The reason for us being here, not only as government officials, but also as the ANC is to ensure that our people lead better lives.

We do not only aim to provide RDP houses in particular, but we also aim to provide houses for those in need,” Makushe-Mazubuko said.

“When we learnt of Maphanga’s situation, that he was living in a shack that was falling apart, we felt it was important for us to do something to restore his dignity.”

Makushe-Mazubuko thanked all the stakeholders who participated in this programme and made sure that Maphanga’s dream of owning a decent house became a reality. She also advised Maphanga to always take care of his new house.

Maphanga told Mpumalanga News that he became disabled after he was involved in a car accident. He has not been able to work to earn a living for many years, leading to him to end up living in a shack.

“My left hand isn’t working at all. With this condition, it is difficult to find a stable job. I stayed in a shack for a long time,” he said.

He said he then decided to approach the executive mayor for help. “After I had a session with the mayor, she said she would come back and as promised, she returned with good news. I am very happy that I am now going to live in a beautiful house,” Maphanga said.
