Universities launch Mpumalanga Artificial Intelligence Student Hackathon

The launch was in line with the theme 'Utilising digital solutions to solve Africa's problems'. The aim was to make the Mpumalanga Artificial Intelligence Student Hackathon more approachable for the students.

The University of Mpumalanga (UMP) and Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) have launched the Mpumalanga Artificial Intelligence Student Hackathon (Maish), under the theme ‘Utilising digital solutions to solve Africa’s problems’.

Speaking at the launch held at the UMP Mbombela Campus, the head of computing and mathematical sciences, Prof Ntombovuyo Wayi-Mgwebi, said Maish is aimed at making students understand the Hackathon, a coding concept that brings together students to accelerate innovation and generate new ideas to solve a problem.

UMP’s dean of the Faculity of Agriculture and Natural Sciences, Prof Ndiko Ludidi, acknowledged the strategic partnership of the leadership of UMP and TUT for propelling the two institutions to successfully execute the 2023 Maish with great success.

“We also recognise the academic and support staff both here at UMP and TUT for their pivotal role in facilitating the learning and teaching for the training that our students – who are participating in the event – undergo and experience.

The continued partnership of our dedicated members of these two institutions, and our stakeholders as well, is exemplary of an excellent and contextually relevant collaboration,” he said.
