Construction of major road in Pienaar to commence

The MEC for roads, Thulasizwe Thomo, announced the long-awaited rehabilitation of the Luphisi Road, which has been a cause for concern for some time.

The much-anticipated construction project on what is known as the Luphisi Road, or the Lihawu Road in Pienaar, is set to commence soon.

This good news was given by the MEC for public works, roads and transport, Thulasizwe Thomo, at the Mbombela Civic Centre on Friday July 19.

Thomo was accompanied by senior management members of his department when he introduced the appointed contractor and engineers to the City of Mbombela. The meeting was attended by the acting executive mayor, Cllr Johan Mkhatshwa, Inkhosi HR Nkosi of the Msogwaba Traditional Council and the contractor.

“We are pleased to announce that the long-awaited rehabilitation of the Luphisi Road [D1723] between Lihawu and the Karino/Plaston [P25/1] turn-off is finally commencing. This critical corridor road has been a priority for our department and we are excited to see the project getting under way,” said Thomo.

A number of protests have erupted in the area over the crumbling state of this particular road. Thomo said his government is now delivering on the promises it had made, especially before the national and provincial elections of May 29.

“We are committed to ensuring that this busy and vital road is restored to its quality state and we look forward to working closely with all stakeholders to make this project a success,” he said.

During the presentation, the department stated that the Gedlembane road is also in the pipeline and would be given the necessary attention in due time.

Nkosi said he appreciated the MEC for introducing the contractor and that the community would be happy about the project that had been discussed during the integrated development project meetings.
