Mbombela caricaturist sketches a bright future for himself

The local caricature artist started drawing in 2020 and hopes to fill the world with colour with his art.

A local caricature artist said he has big dreams and aspirations for his future. Try Phoku is a self-taught visual artist who started drawing in 2012 at the age of 12. This 23-year-old said he was inspired by Pablo Picasso and has looked up to him since he was young.

“I started drawing in 2020 when I realised I can actually make people happy with my work. I realised this when I would give close friends and family some of my work and they loved it,” said Phoku.

He said he uses his art to make a positive difference in the world, inspiring others to do the same and leaving a lasting legacy that will continue to inspire and uplift.

In February 2023, he worked with South African DJ and producer Tyler ICU for the cover art of his song titled “Ngi moja ngawe”, and in the same year, he worked with Mr and Mrs Tshwane Regions 2023. He also made posters for the directors at the Tshwane University of Technology in April this year.

Phoku said he aspires to have his art exhibited in the most prestigious museums and galleries globally, and to receive international recognition and accolades for his work. He said his dream is to travel the world, immerse himself in different cultures and incorporate these experiences into his art.

“I hope to collaborate with other artists, musicians and creatives on innovative projects that push the boundaries of what is possible,” he said.
