Lion loose in Matsulu

The MTPA's spokesperson, Simphiwe Shungube, said the community should not try to catch this lion, as the Damage-causing Animals Unit is responsible for that.

The Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA) says it has dispatched its Damage-causing Animals Unit (DCA) to the Matsulu area following the reports of a roaming lion that was spotted in Ndumbeni Section, and the claims that it had killed a cow. The MTPA’s spokesperson, Simphiwe Shungube, said the public is cautioned to stay alert and not to attempt to catch or kill the lion.

The DCA Unit is planning on setting up a cage with bait in an attempt to catch it. “We suspect that it might have gone back into the Kruger National Park,” Shungube said.
A community member, Calvin Nkosi, said he called the MTPA after some neighbours had informed him about the lion they had seen. He said the MTPA sent out a team and the community showed them the paw prints they had found.

“Two women had gone out to look for herbs next to the youth centre and they saw the lion. We also found a dead cow, which was eaten by this roaming lion. We are not sure when this happened – it could have been any time between Saturday night [June 29] and Sunday morning [June 30].”
