Mpumalanga MEC for education sympathises with families of three teachers killed in N4 collision
Three teachers were killed in a head-on collision involving a sedan and a light delivery vehicle on the N4 on Wednesday February 28.
The Mpumalanga Department of Education (DoE) expressed its dismay at learning of the accident that claimed the lives of three teachers along the N4 between Schagen and Sudwala intersections on Wednesday February 28.
According to the information received from Martin Jeffrey of Emer-G-Med, the victims had been travelling in a sedan when a light delivery vehicle collided head-on with the car on the eastbound N4 lane.
According to the DoE’s spokesperson, Gerald Sambo, these teachers had gone to a Maths, Science and Technology Academy training session in eMalahleni and were returning home when the accident occurred.
One of these teachers was at Masitakhe and the other two were teaching at Tikhontele Secondary School in the Ehlanzeni District.

The MEC for education, Bonakele Majuba, said he is deeply saddened by this shocking accident and has conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. “It is really painful to fathom the news of the passing away of our young teachers who were on a patriotic journey to empower themselves with knowledge so that they could impart it to our children in turn,” he said. “The teachers remain a valuable resource for the growth and development of our communities. If one of them departs from this world, it is a heavy blow to the department and the rest of our communities. In this case, three of them passed away, and it is too much for the department and the province to bear.
“We thus lower the provincial flag as we mourn in our hearts. We convey our condolences and at the same time wish those who are injured a speedy recovery.”

Majuba will visit the schools and the bereaved families on Thursday February 29. He will arrive at the Nkululeko Circuit, Matsulu, where he will meet the principals and members of the school governing bodies of the two schools. Afterwards he will meet with the bereaved families.
Majuba will be accompanied by some officials of the department, including those who will render psychosocial support to the staff and learners.
