Creative uplifts others through local festivals in Nkomazi

Zwelakhe Kunene said as a host of entertainment events, he has seen how these events have played a vital part in the upliftment of individuals in the music and creative industry. He hopes to host more and bigger events.

A hip-hop and kwaito musician, Zwelakhe Kunene (28), also known as Dressy Machuzu, wants to create a platform for Nkomazi-based musicians to be uplifted.

Kunene said he hosts entertainment events at local establishments and an annual festival, which he hopes will attract music lovers to support local artists.

“Creating such platforms is what I am focusing on at the moment, but music will always be my first love. We currently do not have enough platforms that elevate upcoming and talented artists in Nkomazi such as myself. I aim to close this gap and hope to attract more people to showcase their talent just outside their doorstep.”

In 2023, the eSwatini-born Kunene dropped an EP titled Chuzu Nation with four hip-hop songs, leading with “Phunyuka bamphethe”.

He began his career in 2009 as a member of a hip-hop group called Ghetto Life, who released a mixtape featuring its smash hit songs, “Sfikile” and “Ezase mletsi”.

Following his departure from the group, he pursued a solo career and released a mixtape called Blame it on harmonious.

“The mixtape featured the street favourite songs, ‘Sgubhu ungenzani’ and ‘Phez’kwendlu’. It created a path for me in the local entertainment scene as a rapper, songwriter and record director.”

Kunene said he draws inspiration from Brown Dash, Zola 7, K.O, Mandoza and his late brother Menzi Kunene, who was known as Nata and played a big role in his musical skills.

“My biggest motivation is to be a voice of the streets and tell untold stories that will help people view life from different perspectives,” Kunene said.
