MEC for education monitors distribution of tablets at Driekoppies Secondary School

Driekoppies Secondary School is one of the eight schools which will pilot the full implementation of Ubuhlebuzile e-learning programme in 2024.

“All learners at Driekoppies Secondary School in Nkomazi Local Municipality, from Grades 8 to 12, will be provided with tablets to improve their school performance when schools reopen for the 2024 academic year.”
This was a statement made by the MEC for the Department of Education (DoE), Bonakele Majuba, during the press conference at the state-of-readiness meeting for the 2024 school year that was held at Chill Pepper Boutique Hotel on Wednesday January 10.

On Tuesday January 16, the MEC went to Driekoppies Secondary School to fulfil his promise and to monitor the distribution of the tablets to all learners at that school. This is part of Ubuhlebuzile e-learning Full Scale Pilot Programme which aims to provide tablets to learners and laptops to all teachers.

During the conference he said, “The department has selected eight secondary schools, two in each district, which will pilot the full implementation of Ubuhlebuzile e-learning programme this year.

“In these eight schools, learners from Grades 8 to 12 will receive tablets which are fully resourced with education supplementary material to enhance teaching and learning. These tablets were donated to the department by Statistics South Africa. We sincerely thank Stats SA for their patriotic generosity. Our desire is that there must be a tablet with full educational supplementary material in the hands of each learner in the province in the near future. Therefore, this pilot project will help us to fully understand the implications of the modalities and intricacies involved in the full-scale widening of the e-learning programme,” he said.

This initiative follows the launch of the Ubuhlebuzile e-learning programme spearheaded by Premier Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane in Piet Retief on April 5, 2022.

“Ubuhlebuzile learning offers opportunities to adapt learning materials that are suitable for given learning styles or strategies, as well as the needs of learners for each level or grade. This will allow teachers to begin the transition from pen and paper to technology centred learning. This allows learning to happen not only within the four walls of a classroom, but anywhere at any time.”

“The DoE is certain that this initiative will help improve learning outcomes and learner performance in particular. The gadgets come resourced with the required learning material such as e-books, study guides and previous question papers. Learners are urged to take full advantage of this opportunity and to take good care of these gadgets which remains the property of DoE,” said Majuba.
