As part of raising awareness for breast cancer, the Rob Ferreira Provincial Hospital hosted various campaigns in October. On Friday October 27, the hospital hosted a fun walk event in Mbombela and the staff members dressed up in pink.

This year’s theme, ‘No one should face breast cancer alone’, serves as a reminder for care providers to consider the many ways they can partner with patients and families in the prevention, detection and treatment of breast cancer.

The Department of Health’s spokesperson, Dumisani Malamule, said the purpose of this initiative is to increase awareness and educate the staff about this dreadful disease, and to learn more about the signs and symptoms of breast cancer, the risk factors and the importance of early detection and treatment, care and support.

“After the walk, the officials were empowered and capacitated to do breast self-examination. This is to simply use the pads of your fingers, not the tips. Don’t rush. Use different levels of pressure to feel all the breast tissues. If you notice a lump or other changes in your breasts, seek medical assistance from our health facilities for further examination.”
