Legislature conducts public hearing on National Health Insurance Bill in Nkangala

The Mpumalanga MEC for health, Sasekani Manzini, explained how the bill will assist the public and their critical needs.

The Mpumalanga Legislature conducted a public hearing on the National Health Insurance (NHI) Bill in the Hendrina Cosmos Community Hall in the Nkangala District on October 17.

The MEC for health, Sasekani Manzini, was in attendance. She explained the critical aspects of the bill, the objectives of the NHI and how it will assist everyone, irrespective of their financial status to access adequate healthcare services.

According to the Mpumalanga Department of Health (DoH), after the presentation and community engagements, the people of Nkangala and stakeholders agreed to access the Universal Health Insurance.
“Since the start of the public hearing in 2018, the people of Mpumalanga are welcoming the National Health Insurance in their overwhelming majority. This was the last day of the public hearing in the province.”

On October 12, in yet another event by the provincial legislature, the DoH, led by the deputy director general of clinical services, Dudu Mdluli, attended the public hearing meeting regarding the NHI Bill at the Schoemansdal Community Hall in Nkomazi Local Municipality.

The DoH’s spokesperson, Dumisani Malamule, said this meeting is one of many at which maximum participation is encouraged community members to express their views regarding the bill.

“The NHI Bill is a tool for government to achieve the universal health coverage for all people, meaning that every South African will have a right to access comprehensive healthcare services free of charge at the point of care at accredited health facilities, such as clinics and hospitals, and from private health practitioners,” he said.
