Mbombela community welcomes National Arbor Month
Several environmental organisations, led by the City of Mbombela, gave out spekboom trees this morning, September 1.
September 1 is not only Spring Day, but also the beginning of National Arbor Month which is accelerated by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment.
Representatives of the City of Mbombela’s (CoM) environmental department, those of the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Environmental Affairs, and others, handed out 250 spekboom plants to motorists and commuters on corner Madiba Drive and Citrus Crescent at The Square Nelspruit.

One of the organisers and CoM’s environmental officer, Nompumelelo Msomi, said the handout is part of the climate change initiative that was adopted in 2018 to raise awareness of climate-related disaster risks and to encourage the public to mitigate or adapt to the impacts thereof.

“More spekboom trees will be handed out in Hazyview and Barberton on September 4 and 5 respectively. This will be done just ahead of the main programme which is a Climate-Change Awareness Walk to take place at Mbombela Stadium on September 16, where we will also collect used cans and plastic bottles for recycling,” she said.
