Steenbok woman to receive a new house thanks to speaker’s programme

Lucy Nyathi will finally get to have another house after hers burnt down four years ago.

The speaker of the Mpumalanga Legislature, Makhosazane Masilela, has embarked on a mission to build a house through her Speaker’s Legacy Project for a Steenbok resident, Lucy Nyathi, whose house had burned down in December 2019.

Masilela said she was rolling out her programme in Nkomazi last year when she was made aware of Nyathi’s case. She went to pay her a visit and donated a bed, fridge and food parcels, when she saw the dire need to get her office involved in building her a house.

“We did not anticipate the situation to be that dire. We had brought her the furniture upon the understanding that it was only the furniture that she needed. Little did we know that the entire house had burned down. We started engaging different sponsors to ask for donations so we could build her a decent home. We have so far managed to get enough resources to get the work started and we are hoping more people can get involved so we can finish soon,” she said.

“We are appealing for help, especially from the business fraternity, to assist us with the roofing material, more sand, a toilet and everything else that goes into building a house. I was also made aware that there were people who had promised to build her a house back in 2021 or so, but they have not followed up with her. My office has jumped into the project because we understand that everyone should have decent shelter, and even though we might not be capable to carry out the project, we can facilitate the donations to make sure that it happens,” said Masilela.
