Academy develops young players in Mbombela

Mpumalanga Sports Award winner, Sibusiso Mhlanga said the aim of the initiative is to encourage education through sports, by using soccer as a vehicle to grab the attention of these future stars.

Emhlangeni Sports Academy is giving toddlers a rare opportunity to develop basic football skills from an early age.

Spearheaded by the Mpumalanga Sports Award winner, Sibusiso Mhlanga, this unique programme, also known as “EsaKids”, focuses on grooming and mentoring children from the age of two with basic football skills.

“This is a unique initiative in South Africa and particular in this province. We are currently the only academy that offers football training to little children in the province. This programme is supported mostly by parents, and the children love it as well,” said Mhlanga.

He said the training sessions are conducted every Friday and Saturday at Mbombela Stadium’s outer fields.

“We are actually working towards expanding branches around Ehlanzeni, and this will also assist more teams in the future to produce quality products that will feed Mpumalanga’s promotional leagues. The programme excites me because the parents are so supportive, and the kids are always available and show interest in the game. We are about encouraging education through sports, but we are using soccer as a vehicle to grab the attention of these future stars,” said Mhlanga.

He said they always host camps during the school holidays, and invite children to be part of the training clinics.
