A Mbombela matriculant’s path made smoother

Despite starting his school in a rural area, he adjusted very well to an urban school and was enjoying every moment of it. He recently attended his matric dance in style, and was delighted to be among his classmates.

An Innibos bursary beneficiary, Jetro Nkuna, was among those who attended the Meridian Karino matric dance at Bingalela Lodge in Steiltes on Friday April 14.

Jetro said he was delighted and loved every moment. He was specially transported in a convertible Mercedes-Benz and walked the red carpet at this prestigious event to meet his fellow classmates.

“I am very happy that I have made it to matric. This farewell means a lot to me and prepares me for greater things. I would like to thank Curro, TRACN4 and Innibos for giving me the opportunity for a quality education. I had lots of fun at the matric dance and it was well organised,” he said.

His adopted mother, Mel Tomlinson, and his teachers all said they were very fond of him. He was selected as a learner leader in matric and given the position of head of boys’ boarding. According to them, he has natural leadership qualities and a kind and a gentle heart, always looking out for the less privileged. He loves playing chess and is a talented long-distance runner, having been awarded for his various accomplishments in 2022.

He started his high school career in a rural school before Tomlinson approached the Innibos Fund to apply for a bursary so he could attend Meridian Karino. She said it was a very big and scary step. He lived with his grandmother, and leaving home to attend boarding school was a new experience.

“I have always been surprised at how well adjusted and adaptable Jetro is. He receives every opportunity with enthusiasm and appreciation,” Tomlinson said.

Jetro wants to study further and is most likely to go into the teaching profession. Coming from a single-grandparent home, his financial challenges are enormous, and without this Curro bursary, financial assistance from TRACN4 and the Innibos Fund, this would not have been possible.
