Barberton songstress has a hit

Bongiwe Portia Hlophe is behind the hit song 'Balele', as shown on MTV Base.

Barberton’s very own house and Afro-pop vocalist is building her own name nationally.

Bongiwe Portia Hlophe felt ecstatic to have one of her songs played on local radio stations and on one of DStv’s music channels, MTV Base.

Hlophe, also known as Lady P Musiq, said she has received great recognition for her song titled “Balele”.

“This song has put me on the map and is an encouragement to create more music that people can relate to. ‘Balele’ is about the timing of success. No one knows when they will be successful, but we have to remain hopeful. To have the music video be played on MTV Base means so much to me,” Hlophe said.

The 25-year-old started making music professionally in 2019, although she realised her singing talent at 12.

“I used to see lot of musicians from disadvantaged backgrounds become successful. I thought I would also be able to do it. So, I released my first single, ‘Litsemba’. This is a song to encourage those who have lost hope in life. People began to show their support for my music,” she said.

2019 was quite a fruitful year for the songstress.

“I won the best upcoming artist of the year at the Barberton Music Excellent Awards, was nominated at the Mpumalanga Music Awards, and also auditioned for season 16 of Idols SA,” Hlophe said.

Fast forward to 2022. She entered the Music Creative Workshop and obtained third place in the competition for music vocalists.

Other than music, Hlophe is passionate about giving back to her community. She founded a non-profit organisation, the Lady P Musiq Foundation, through which she has donated dignity packs to disadvantaged local girls.

“I know the struggle of growing up without parents to provide for my needs. I want to help orphans and those who lack. I want to also donate food parcels to disadvantaged families in Barberton,” she said.

Hlophe said her plans and dreams include becoming a famous multi-award-winning musician. Her music is available on YouTube, Audiomack and Distrokid.
