Two foreign nationals arrested with dagga worth R700k in Sabie

Two suspects were busted with 14 bags of dagga.

Two foreign nationals, aged 29 and 34, from Tanzania and the Kingdom of eSwatini were arrested with 479kg of dagga on Wednesday January 25 at about 06:30.

According to a provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, members of the visible policing in Sabie were conducting a stop-and-search operation when they stopped a white Hyundai H1 with foreign registration number plates.

“Upon searching the vehicle, they found 14 plastic bags of dagga sealed with masking tape. The dagga weighing in at about 479kg. It is estimated at more than R700 000 in street value.”

Mohlala said the suspects had travelling documents.

“During a preliminary investigation, it transpired that the dagga was from the Kingdom of eSwatini and further investigations will hopefully reveal its destination.

Both suspects had valid travel documents, but we will engage with the Department of Home Affairs to verify the legitimacy of their documents,” he said.

The suspects are expected to make their first court appearance today, Thursday January 26, in the Sabie Magistrate’s Court.

The provincial commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Manamela commended members for their notable success. “I would like to emphasise that people must never make a mistake of thinking Mpumalanga is as an easy passage for narcotics and other illicit substances,” she said.
