TS Galaxy: No double over Mamelodi Sundowns

The Rockets succumbed to a 2-1 defeat against Mamelodi Sundowns.

TS Galaxy could not to rewrite history at Mbombela Stadium on Tuesday night when they failed to complete the league double over the defending champions, Mamelodi Sundowns.

The Tshwane giants, Sundowns, are on a rampage and have claimed a Premier Soccer League (PSL) record-extending 13th successive victory, with the 2-1 defeat against The Rockets.

If Mpumalanga lone team TS Galaxy could have won the encounter on home soil, this could have meant that they are team number 10 in the history of the PSL to achieve a double over Masandawana.

Kaizer Chiefs remain the only team that have the most doubles over Rhulani Mokwena’s troops (four), while Orlando Pirates and Ajax Cape Town have achieved the feat twice each.

This win against The Rockets saw Masandawana open a 19-point gap at the top of the DStv Premiership standings. They are the only team in the country to have won their last five encounters.

Currently they have amassed 49 points while their runner-up, the Natal Rich Boyz, Richards Bay, are on 30 points with two games in hand, and in football, a game in hand is not an assurance of a win.

Sundowns have only lost twice this season; one of those occurred at home against The Rockets on August 10, 2022, and the other was against SuperSport United in the Tshwane derby on September 2, 2022.

In the 18 games played so far in the 2022/23 season, TS Galaxy have only managed three victories, leaving them in 12th place overall with 19 points, 10 draws and five defeats.

Mamelodi Sundowns have a tricky yet achievable game against the on-form Limpopo side, Sekhukhune United, on Saturday January 28, while The Rockets will host Durban outfit Golden Arrows on Sunday January 29.
