Nsikazi gogos keep fit by playing soccer

Some gogos participated in a soccer tournament held at the Msogwaba Sports Ground.

Keeping fit is what most modern gogos are all about. According to some soccer gogos in Nsikazi, they address their diabetes and high blood pressure when they run around the field.

Soccer teams consisting of grannies took part in a soccer tournament at the Msogwaba Sports Ground on Saturday November 19.

One who plays for the Daantjie soccer team, Aletta Khumalo, said the aim is to keep healthy – physically and mentally.

“As women, we go through a lot of stressful situations that can cause disease and disfunction. Some of us have found a way to not only burn fat, but also tackle mental stresses through socialising with our peers. The aim is to age in style,” Khumalo said.

She said the tournaments for gogos started in 2011.

“There ae a lot teams that take part in tournaments in various townships in Nsikazi. It has been kept going by several chairpersons. We even get sponsors that donate kits and equipment to make our hobby an enjoyable one. We get to travel and compete with other women in areas such as Hammanskraal in Pretoria and Nkomazi,” Khumalo said.

She said they are excited to participate in tourneys in which they can win prizes, and get more gogos to join in the fun.

“We are always working to be competitive like other teams and to grow our teams with the mission to have active grannies in the community,” Khumalo said.
