Working on Fire spreads fire awareness in Nkomazi

The WOF programme and other community organisations conducted various campaigns to create awareness on the impact of fires.

Working on Fire Mpumalanga recently joined forces with community development workers, participants of the Community Works Programme and Nkomazi community members to spread the #BeFireSafe message and build a fire-resilient community.

The organisations conducted a clean-up campaign around the community and at Intfutfuko Primary School on October 25. The group also visited other community members and shared fire awareness information, including the burning issue of climate change and its impact, especially wildland fires, during a door-to-door activity. The group encouraged the community to take ownership of their safety by eliminating fire hazards, especially dumpsites that ignite and fuel fires.

“The fire awareness activities were in commemoration of the International Day of Disaster Risk Reduction, which is celebrated annually on October 13. WOF encouraged everybody to take part in building more disaster-resilient communities in October,” said the Mpumalanga WOF’s spokesperson, Amanda Mthembu.
