Lowveld Walkers raise cancer awareness on walk from White River to Kiaat Hospital

The walkers raised awareness on various issues affecting communities on their various walks.

It was a pink and white themed event as the Lowveld Walkers embarked on their fifth annual cancer awareness walk on Saturday October 29. They walked from the Sasol Garage White River on the R40 to Kiaat Private Hospital.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual campaign to raise awareness about the impact of breast cancer.

Joseph Mashaba, the founder of Lowveld Walkers, said as a way to raise awareness and to be visible in the road, the walkers dressed in pink and white.

According to him, this is their annual big event, one which they look forward to.

“We have members battling with cancer. We have lost a member through it last year, and we have a couple of members who recently lost family members to cancer. The walk was more of a way for us to show support to them and their families while raising awareness for the public to take it more serious. We want to urge the public to go for their yearly checkups and to learn more on the diseases.”

Mashaba said the turnout was more than what was expected.

“This was by far the most successful event we have ever hosted, in terms of numbers and participants wearing the theme of the day. My heart is filled with joy and I am in a happy place looking at the fact that finally people from our region are taking our awareness to heart and more seriously.”

He said the work would not have been a success without the support they received from the public, sponsors and everyone who lent a hand when they were planning the event.

“I am grateful and appreciate everyone who came through to make the event possible. The sponsors made it possible for us to have vouchers and other things we needed.”
