The mayor said she will introduce a new department in the municipality that will focus on economic development and has also already started processes that will fast-track the construction of roads.

With just a few days into office, the new executive mayor of Nkomazi, Cllr Phindile Magagula, has already outlined some of the priorities that will be focused on as she takes over the municipality.

The mayor said she will introduce a new department in the municipality that will focus on economic development and has also already started processes that will fast-track the construction of roads.

“It has been 10 months of going back and forth in the municipality, but I am happy that we have moved on from that. In my reign of office, I will focus vehemently on economic growth. We have not had a local development department for a long time, and I will introduce it as a stand-alone department for which we will have people with the right skills running it.

The department will also take over the special economic zone [SEZ], which was previously moved across the existing departments. “We will have a debrief with the SEZ team to find out where they are in terms of progress and take it from there,” said Magagula.

Her office will zoom in on the progress regarding roads that need to be fixed, together with the ones that need to be constructed from scratch.
“I have already started with consultations with my team, and we will soon request a meeting with the MEC for public works, roads and transport so we can find out what progress there is in communities that have terrible roads and those that have been on the waiting list for a long time, such as Dludluma.

“We will request their plans as the department and then check which roads would need to be prioritised and also check how soon we can start working,” she said.

Magugula finally took over the reigns as mayor, following the sacking of the former mayor, Johan Musa Mkhatshwa.
