Grade 10 learner allegedly stabbed to death by another learner in Gert Sibande District

The Department of Education (DoE) said it is allegedly a gang related incident and it said it was saddened by the passing of this learner.

The Mpumalanga Department of Education (DoE) has released a statement stating it learnt with shock about the death of a learner at Cebisa Secondary School in Ermelo, Gert Sibande District on Tuesday August 16.

According to the spokesperson for the DoE, Jasper Zwane, it is alleged that a gangster related fight made its way into the school during break time wherein a Grade 10 learner was stabbed by another learner.

“Regrettably, the stabbed learner succumbed to his injuries at Ermelo Public Hospital. It is alleged that both learners belong to different troublesome gangs in the township. The passing on of a learner through a stabbing on school grounds is a sad and unfortunate development.”

He said the department condemns any form of violence that makes its way into schools in the strongest terms possible.

The MEC for DoE, Bonakele Majuba, condemned this incident and has directed that the department work with the law enforcement institutions to probe the circumstance which led to this sad development. He further conveyed his sincere condolences to the bereaved family.

Majuba will visit Cebisa Secondary School on Thursday August 18, together with officials who will render psychosocial assistance to all who are directly or indirectly affected by this incident.
