Sabie water reservoir possibly poisoned

The Thaba Chweu Local Municipality is urgently warning residents to stop all comsumption of municipal water.

The Thaba Chweu Local Municipality (TCLM) said on Saturday August 13 that the water supply to Sabie will only be reopened again after a water reservoir thought to be poisoned has been tested for safety.

Consumption of water that may have been stored in the last few days should be disposed of.

“Residents are urged not to drink the water that is currently in their pipes, however, they may use it for cleaning or to flush toilets. Drinking water will be supplied through water tankers until the safety of the water has been determined. The TCLM leadership and officials are currently on-site to take water samples for testing. Meanwhile, all reservoirs and pipes are being flushed as a decontamination measure. Residents are urged not to panic as the matter is receiving the urgency it deserves. Updates will be given in this regard,” said Themba Sibiya, the spokesperson for TCLM.

TCLM said an investigation is being done into the source of the possible water poisoning. Results will be revealed after the testing.
