Mkhuhlu-born musician takes traditional gospel to greater heights

Gospel Silinda takes pride of his Shangaan culture in his music.

Taking over the province’s gospel music industry is Gospel Silinda with his touch of tradition and culture. His recent hit, “Ku rhandza ka Xikwembu ku endlekile” on the album Son of a King, also referred to as Soak, which he recorded live towards the end of 2021, is a depiction of his pride in the Shangaan culture and language.

“The cultural spirit has always been embedded in me from a young age and influenced by my upbringing in Mkhuhlu outside Hazyview.
“The song is loved by many and is currently sitting at close to one million views on YouTube. This shows that when it is time, it will surely happen as the song says,” Silinda said.

Most people may know him as a Joyous Celebration singer and an ambassador rocking various attires influenced by the Xitsonga culture, but he is surely making a big name for himself as an independent artist as well.

“I have learnt a lot being part of the biggest music group in the country. I was able to impart the experience and skills I have learnt to build my own independent name. Many people ask me how I managed to create my recent project independently, and I can proudly say it was the knowledge I gained from Joyous Celebration,” he said.

He reminisced about his musical journey. “I started singing professionally in 2004 and have released a few albums before. In 2017, I stopped recording and joined the music group. Moreover, the journey has been amazing and there is still a lot I am learning.” He is cooking another album, but his fans will have to be patient as they enjoy the current one.

“I am planning to do the live recording of my next album at a local stadium in Bushbuckridge, and have an album tour around the province,” he said.
