St Mark’s six could shine in the U17 national team

The six selected Mbombela boys are awaiting the final call-ups to be released in September, then they can finally join the national team camp.

Six learners of St Mark’s School were selected to join the U17 national soccer squad this year, building on the school’s existing reputation of producing professional soccer players.

They are Thando Sihlabeli (14), Tshiamo Makobe (14) , Khuselo Ndlovu (13), Pholosho Shakoane (14), Khanya Mbokodo (13) and Phiwokuhle Dube (13).

The head coach, Rewano Swarts, said, “The six boys were selected during the National Winter Games Championships, where they were representing their province and school. They are awaiting the final call-ups to be released in September, then they can finally join the national team camp. The school, which is the only one in the province to have won multiple national championships, flew the flag high and brought honour to the province.”

The most recent successes of this school includes Brendon Makgope, who signed his professional contract with PSL club Marumo Gallants, and Dan Ndlovu, who won national caps with Bafana Bafana at Cosafa and national team Afcon qualifiers. Ndlovu signed with Baroka FC last season when they were still campaigning in the top-flight soccer league in the country.

St Mark’s was founded by Abel Nkuna in 2002 with the goal of establishing a sporting school in Mbombela. It was originally named East High School of Excellence Academy.
