SPCA Witbank confirms serval and two cubs spotted in Hlalanikahle

The SPCA recommends to the community not to chase or attempt to catch the cat and its cubs, and to instead call experts for assistance.

A resident reportedly informed the Vosman police this morning, July 20, that they had spotted a wild cat with two cubs roaming around Hlalanikahle Ext 3.

Subsequently, when the police saw the cat this morning at about 09:00, they confirmed the report. They were unable to determine the cat’s breed, but warned the public to exercise caution, because they were unsure whether the wild animal was a threat.

The police warned the public to avoid the location where the cat was last seen, and to refrain from approaching or trying to harm it, because it might retaliate and hurt them.

Nicholas Mahlangu, the inspector of SPCA Witbank, has confirmed that the cat is a serval, and a team is on the scene attempting to trace and capture it.

“We saw the serval with its two cubs while we were approaching, but we were unable to capture it. We warn the residents to be cautious and to call us if they spot it again, instead of attempting to trap or harm it. We have more expertise working with animals, therefore we recommend to the community not to chase or agitate the cat, as it might pose a danger to them, and they should refrain from trying to hurt the cubs,” said Mahlangu.
