Matsulu family escapes raging fire, needs help

The ward councillor also made a call and appealed to businesses for help.

The Mogola family is lucky to be alive after they escaped a raging fire that engulfed their house and everything inside, very early on Sunday morning.

According to the elder sister, Palesa Mogola, they were all asleep when they were suddenly awakened by the flames and smoke.

“We tried everything to save whatever we could, but the fire was just too fierce. We lost everything, from school uniforms to books, identity documents and furniture.”

She said even though they were lucky to escape the fire unharmed, they feel empty and dead inside, because the fire had left them with nothing but tears and misery. “If it weren’t for our neighbours and members of the community, we would have been left in the streets without food or shelter,” Mabuza said.

Upon hearing of this incident, the ward councillor, Maggie Nkosi, in collaboration with some local companies, Mkhabela Construction, Talent Jay Brands, AndileAmu and Techlam Projects, came together and bought materials to repair the house.

“We decided to come to the space with the little we had in our pockets to assist this family, because, as you can see, the situation is really bad. We really could not just sit around and watch these young people sleep in the cold. We bought some materials to fix whatever we could, but there is still so much work here, and hopefully other businesses and individuals will come forward,” said Talent Nkosi, one of the donors of Talent Jay Brands.

The councillor said the family members need clothes, bedding, food and furniture.

“I would like to thank all those who played a role in ensuring that the house gets fixed so the family can have a roof over their heads. I want to applaud the volunteers who gave their time, energy and hands to fix the house for free. This is really the spirit of ubuntu and I am certain that our father, Nelson Mandela, would be proud of us,” she said.
