MEC promises to address Marongwane road issue

The MEC said her department will send a team to assess the D3975 in July.

Following much public outcry, the MEC for public works, roads and transport, Mohita Latchminarain, finally visited the Marongwane community and addressed their challenges regarding the D3975.

The road in question runs between Mkhuhlu and the R40 and passes through the villages of Thusanang, Oakley, and Marongwane.
Latchminarain visited the area on Friday May 27 following community protests, which left at least five trucks in ashes.

“The road will be evaluated for traffic volume, population served and economic activity along the route, among other variables, in order to ensure adequate road design. The team will submit a report for further consideration. Meanwhile, the department will guarantee that the road is kept safe and usable by routine maintenance such as grading, plant control, drain cleaning, and, on occasion, gravelling.”

She further urged the community to stop destroying property and torching trucks.

“The community is urged to stay away from criminal actions disguised as service delivery protests, such as burning down of trucks on the R40,” pleaded Latchminarain.
